President Moon stresses patriotism in fighting COVID-19 at West Sea Defense Day commemoration Updated: 2020-03-27 17:06:27 KST

President Moon Jae-in says South Koreans need strong pride in their nation to overcome the coronavirus outbreak.
Speaking at the fifth West Sea Defense Day commemoration at the National Cemetery in Daejeon on Friday, President Moon said the unyielding sacrifices and devotion of those who died defending the country against North Korea's military provocations are an important symbol for everyone, especially at a time of crisis.

Patriotism is indeed our strongest security. It lays the groundwork for a country to be unshakeable. As long as our troops remember the patriotism shown by the heroes who defended the West Sea, and as long as that history remains in the memory of the people, we'll overcome any crisis.

Moon thanked the military for their efforts tackling the outbreak,.. pointing to their volunteer work and donations as well as how military nurses helped treat COVID-19 patients.
He said such actions show that South Korea is pulling together as a nation through unity and cooperation.
Friday marked the first time President Moon attended the event since taking office reflecting the administration's determination to maintain national security and create lasting peace.

"The government will certainly bring everlasting peace to the Korean peninsula through strong security.
With a beefed-up defense posture, we will remember the sacrifices of our heroes. Together with the public that trusts and cheers for the military, we will walk the road of prosperity and peace."

President Moon also pledged that the government would do its best to ensure fallen patriots are treated respectfully.

The West Sea Defense Day falls on the fourth Friday of March every year and remembers the troops killed in the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong, the sinking of the Cheonan warship and the shelling of Yeonpyeong-do Island.
