NASA's pioneering mathematician Katherine Johnson has died at the age of 101.
The space agency announced her death on Twitter on Monday, saying it was honoring "her legacy of excellence that broke down racial and social barriers."
She played a key role in NASA's space missions in the 1960s and 70s.
Her accomplishments were portrayed in the 2016 film "Hidden Figures".
She was also awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
