The State Department's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Korea and Japan, Marc Knapper, says there are no discussions going on at this point about removing U.S. troops from South Korea or Japan.
He confrmed this on Friday in a news conference in Washington.
Knapper said the U.S. values the commitments it's made to its allies, calling those obligations to Korea and Japan "sacred."
But he also urged Seoul and Tokyo to contribute more to their security alliance with Washington in terms of funding.
He said U.S. believes its allies can, and should, do more, and this applies, he said, not just to South Korea, but allies around the world, including Japan.
