N. Korea developing ICBM would pose direct threat to U.S. mainland: Esper Updated: 2019-12-14 12:17:03 KST

U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper warned that if North Korea develops an intercontinental ballistic missile, it will pose a direct threat to the U.S. mainland.
Speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Friday, Esper warned that Pyeongyang already has nuclear weapons and that they are trying to develop long-range missiles.
Stressing that war on the Korean peninsula would be horrible and nobody wants to see that happening, the U.S defense secretary said that Washington is trying hard to bring Pyeongyang back to the negotiating table.
Though stressing that the threat of North Korea's nuclear and missile programs should be resolved through diplomacy, Esper said Washington is maintaining a heightened readiness posture should negotiations fall through.
