Sunday marked ten years since the death of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, an icon in the country's struggle for democracy.
Commemorating the late leader on Sunday, President Moon Jae-in promised to build peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula with the help of the Korean people.
On social media, he praised Kim Dae-jung's "bold imagination," which he said gave the country hope.
President Moon also noted the joint declaration signed with Japan during Kim's tenure, under which the two sides promised a new partnership for the 21st century.
That declaration was also cited by the speaker of the National Assembly on Sunday, as he commemorated the late president.
Moon Hee-sang said South Korea will overcome the current situation with Japan.
