U.S. slows hiring of Chinese nationals by chip makers Updated: 2019-05-22 12:58:00 KST

The U.S. government is slowing down its approvals for Chinese nationals to take advanced engineering jobs at American semiconductor companies, a move seen as an effort to prevent leaks of technology.
The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that the Commerce Department is closely reviewing the hiring process with other authorities including the State Department and the Pentagon.
The approval process used to take several weeks, but it's now reportedly taking up to eight months.
The disruption began last year and has affected hundreds of jobs across the industry ad companies including Intel and Qualcomm.
