China's economy grows 6.8% on strong consumer spending Updated: 2018-04-17 13:58:03 KST

Despite concerns of a trade war between Washington and Beijing, China's GDP marked a six point eight percent on-year expansion in Q1.
The trend is mainly fuelled by strong consumer spending, and suggests the nation's economy is holding up well in the midst of a trade skirmish with Washington.
The growth rate matches Bloomberg's projection for the Chinese economy, but is higher than Reuters' forecasts, and is well above the targets discussed in China's National People's Congress held last year.
However, the Asian giant also saw relatively sluggish growth in manufacturing and investment.
