The Olympic flame is finally in Korea, arriving at the nation's main gateway, Incheon International Airport on Wednesday morning.
The flame, which was kept in a special safety lamp to fly more than eight-and-a-half thousand kilometers from Greece, was brought by a special delegation that included President and CEO of the PyeongChang 2018 organizing committee Lee Hee-beom, and Honorary Ambassador and former Olympic figure skating gold medalist, Kim Yuna.
"Delegates and distinguished guests, now, the Olympic Games have begun. City of PyeongChang and Korea are ready to welcome people from all around the world."
Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon and Kim Yuna lit up the Olympic Torch and a mini cauldron using the flame from the lamp, signaling the start of the torch's journey to the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium. The torch was then brought to Incheon Bridge to start the relay across the nation.
The first torchbearer was Yoo Young, who is widely tipped to be Korea's next figure skating star.
The next torchbearer was one of Korea's most famous TV personalities, Yoo Jae-suk.
Other torchbearers of the day included the designer of the torch, Kim Young-se, and K-pop star Suzi.
Local residents and supporters were also present at the event, cheering and expressing their support for the upcoming games.
"Having participated in this torch relay celebration made me realize that the Winter Olympics is almost here "
"We're honored to be a part of the first day of the relay. We hope more people join us in cheering for PyeongChang 2018."
The last torchbearer of the day, IOC member Yoo Seung-min, arrived at Moonlight Park in Incheon's Songdo in the evening, where he lit up a mini cauldron, marking a successful first day of the torch relay, which was then followed by performances and fireworks.
"The torch will be taken now to Korea's southern island of Jeju on Thursday. 7,500 torchbearers will then take turns carrying the torch all across Korea,.. covering a total distance of exactly 2,18 kilometers to arrive at the host city of PyeongChang on February 9th, 2018.
