International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons wins 2017 Nobel Peace Prize Updated: 2017-10-06 18:40:48 KST

This year's Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded not to an individual but to group -- the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, which is working to eliminate all nuclear weapons under international law.
The Nobel committee recognized the group's work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons…. and its efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition on them.
The disarmament group promotes the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, a legally binding prohibition on nuclear weapons that is supported by more than 100 nations.
The award comes amid speculation that U.S. President Donald Trump could be preparing to abandon the nuclear deal struck with Iran in 2015 and as the U.S. and North Korea are engaged in a standoff over the North's nuclear weapons program.
