Air pollution contributes to kidney disorders Updated: 2017-09-24 15:53:14 KST

New research suggests it's not just our lungs that are hurt by pollution in the air -- but that severe air pollution could increase the risk of kidney disorders and, ultimately, kidney failure.
Medical scientists at Washington University, in collaboration with researchers at the Veterans Affairs’ Clinical (Epi--demi--ology) Epidemiology Center, published the data in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology last week.
The data was collected over a period of eight and a half years from 2004 through an evaluation of more than 2-and-a-half million people.
Although diabetes and high blood pressure are the biggest causes of kidney diseases, the study shows that even relatively low levels of particulate matter concentrations can adversely affect the kidneys.
