UNESCO likely to add Haenyeo Culture to list of intangible heritage of humanity Updated: 2016-11-01 03:59:58 KST

UNESCO will likely register Jeju's Haenyeo Culture, the women divers of Korea's biggest island, as a cultural heritage.
The government says that, if it happens, Haenyeo Culture will be Korea's 19th cultural asset to be added to UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
UNESCO says Haenyeo culture deserves recognition as it encompasses traditional rituals, passes down technical know-how across generations, and promotes community cohesion.
The addition will be finalized during the 11th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage scheduled from November 26th to December 2nd in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
